Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from the ACTH(4-10) fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The N-terminal ACTH(4-7) core (Met-Glu-His-Phe) is extended with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail that resists enzymatic degradation and prolongs activity. Unlike the parent ACTH molecule it is devoid of corticotropic (hormonal) activity, yet retains the neurotropic properties of the melanocortin family. It is widely studied as a nootropic and neuroprotective research peptide, notably for its modulation of the BDNF/TrkB neurotrophin system, monoaminergic neurotransmission and neuroprotection after cerebral ischemia. aminobay supplies it lyophilized for laboratory research applications only.
