MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the twelve-S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome. First described in 2015, it is one of a small class of peptides encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than the nuclear genome, and is studied as a regulator of metabolic homeostasis, insulin sensitivity and cellular stress adaptation. Under metabolic stress or exercise, MOTS-c translocates to the nucleus and, via the folate-methionine cycle and AMPK signalling, modulates the expression of stress-adaptive nuclear genes. aminobay supplies it lyophilized for laboratory research applications only.
